LRA vibration motor

Linear resonant actuators, it is known as LRAs, also can be thought of as a mass spring system. There is a coil suspended by springs and when voltage is applied, the coil generates a magnetic field. The coil interacts with the magnet and mass, whereas the magnetic field varies with the applied drive signal, the magnet and mass move up and down creating force. This force is called vibration force. Therefore, it also belongs to the vibration motors. Linear vibration motor (LRA) provides faster response time and longer usage life when compared with ERMs. As such, linear vibration motor is more commonly used in handsets, wearable device, mobile phones.

1) This is the newly developed Linear Motor vibrating in direction Z with a very long life time of 1 million cycles at the test mode 2s On 1s Off as one cycle.
2) This Linear Motor also have a very strong acceleration/ vibration force at its peak acceleration value around 1.8G, much stronger than other normal brush type coin motors at 0.6-0.8G usually.
3) This Linear Motor is specially for high-end and high reliable electronic consumer products.
4) When compared to standard brushed ERM vibration motors, LRA’s are higher in price and must be used with external driver IC.
Unlike conventional brushed DC vibration motors, linear resonant actuators must be driven by an AC signal at the devices resonant frequency. A number of companies make IC drivers for linear vibration motors that supply the correct drive signals and contain a library of haptic effects you can choose from. TI is one such company that makes LRA drivers IC’s. TI makes and evaluation board that incorporates the TI DRV2605L haptic driver IC.

If you are not really using a haptic chip, an ERM will be much easier to drive. If you are utilizing a haptic chip then an LRA has a couple of great advantages:

Remarkable haptic response
Highly valuable
No external moving parts ( better to mount)
Don't suffer from the same mechanical put on as and DC motors, leading to fewer failures and drastically increased lifetime

Whilst these types of benefits will be fantastic, LRAs do contain a higher cost than ERMs. How price sensitive is certainly your target market? It's worth noting that as volume increases (~10k+), the unit costs can start become very similar.
